Puppies, Puppies Everywhere!!

This little guy was abandoned a few days ago with three little sisters (below).

This time of the year is the worst for abandoned puppies.  Over the last few weeks, we have been faced with trying to accommodate 29 puppies, ages from 2 ½ months or less!! We don’t have a shelter; we are volunteers who find space in our homes and yards.  To start, if they are in a dangerous spot we move them somewhere less dangerous.  If our homes are full we start asking people we know if they can help in any way.  If our friends can't help we have to find a place to put them away from cars or people that might harm them until something better can be found.

Although abandonment happens all year long, in spring we see a peak. It is not so much the strays giving birth as we have been on top of that situation for the most part with our catch and release program.  The problem comes from irresponsible pet owners who allow their dogs to mate without either considering what will happen to the puppies or not caring what will happen to them.  Once the puppies are weaned or start to have teeth they are abandoned.  For some of these owners neutering their dog is too expensive, for others they view neutering unnatural and against the dogs nature, yet for a few it is just how they learned to deal with their pregnant female.  What ever the reason the victims are the puppies that find themselves exposed.  Often the number of puppies is overwhelming for us and by the time we can accommodate all of them some are lost, cars being the number one cause of death.  It is always difficult to see a dog die or injured by a hit and run, but for me, when this happens to a puppy, it just kills me inside.

This litter of four, one boy, three girls, was very thin and quite timid.

Working with the local community we have made baby steps in changing old ways, however when this time of the year comes around, coming face to face with more than we can handle I feel like we have made no progress at all. We still have a long way to go.  In the mean time the puppies need our help and with out it they have little hope.  I would love to hear your ideas or personal experiences with regards to this matter.  Please feel free to comment below.

A litter of four, one boy and three girls, was abandon a few days ago in a neighbourhood.  They were very thin and quite scared of people.  Unfortunately for these four, we are at this time full and do not have a safe place to put them.  We have had to leave them in the neighbourhood where they were found. They have been treated for external and internal parasites and are being fed and they can put on some weight.  We are monitoring them and hope everyday something safer for them will turn up.

Thank you

   Update on the puppies above.
Unfortunately two of the puppies did not make it.  The tiny black little boy was killed by an adult dog and the other (all brown)  died of unknown causes.  The other two we were able to place them in a shelter where they have since found homes.

K.K.
