Daphne's Woe

She was found in the middle of a dangerous road wandering alone.  Another hunting dog abandoned!  One look at her eyes and the problem is evident.  Did her owner not think she was worth the trouble to help her condition?  What ever her story, she was lucky the right person saw her that day.  Her future from that moment changed for the better. The procedure is routine; a worm pill, food, a visit to the vet as soon as possible and a safe place for her to receive her therapy.  Once she is on the road to recovery … maybe someone will want to adopt her.  Is Daphne worth it…damn right she is!!

I will be updating on Daphne here and on Facebook at,  For the Strays: https://www.facebook.com/forthestrays?ref=hl

Update..21/2/2014

The vet explained that Daphne has a bad corneal ulcer, keratitis, in her right eye and to a lesser degree in her left. I can tell that she is in pain. I don’t want to talk about the worst. I am hoping that the therapy will bring good results and that she will get better. She will need over a month to recover and we hope all will go well. She is on exocin drops (antibiotics) and cornergel to mend the cornea. She is also getting fed three times a day to bring up her body wieght.  She is really a smart, gentle and cuddly little girl. Get better soon, Daphne.

 SUPURB NEWS!

Daphne's therapy is doing wonders.  Over the last few days I have seen marked improvment in her eyes.  In the mean time she has put on a little weight and is becoming more beautiful as each day passes.

Update, 11/03/2014

Although Daphne's eyes are almost better, her over all health has not improved.  She has stopped gaining weight, she remains very thin and it is apparent she has anemia.  Today she developed a rash on the underside of her hind legs for reasons not apparent.  She will need to have blood work done to see if there are other problems holding her progress back.

We suspected that Daphne had further problems holding back her progress. Her blood tests came back positive for Leishmania.  She has been put on Allopurinol.  I believe she will do well now that we know what we are dealing with.

After my last update, Daphne was put on antibiotics for her skin rash and she has been taking a Zylapour pill everyday for the Leishmania.  The rash soon disappeared and she thankfully began to put on more weight.  Lastly, the ulcers in her eyes have completely healed.  She is a wonderful, lovable and sweet dog.

Her previous owners didn't want to deal with  her health issues.  They only wanted her for hunting purposes. She was replacable.  They abandoned her to fend for herself.  Once abandoned, almost blinded by the ulcers, she would not have made it out there alone.  She was fortunate to have been rescued that day in February. I want her to continue to receive the best possible care  to increase her chances of getting adopted.  I want her Leishmania to go away so she doesn't have to take the Allopurinol everyday.  She deserves the best that can be done for her.  Every life deserves a chance.

After discussing it with the vet we would like to do Milteforan therapy for the Leishmania.  It is costly, roughly 130 Euros.  The money will have to be raised, I can't do it alone with the load of cases. We need any help we can get.  Is there someone out there who would consider sponsoring Dahpne for her treatment? Her sponsor will recieve a picture and video of Daphne plus updates about her progress  Please leave a message in the comments if you would like to sponsor or write to me at  tinakan2@gmail.com.
Donations are also welcome through PAYPAL at tinakanellos2@hotmail.com

Thank you

Fantastic news!!!!!   Despite the fact that after my last update we were not able to raise the money for the Milteforan treatment and Daphne remained on Zylapour, earlier this month a wonderful family saw the beauty in Daphne and despite the Leishmania accepted her into their home! She has done very well on the Zylapour and her last blood tests appeared as if she had no Leishmania at all.  An adoption for a dog like Daphne is what we hope for all our rescues.  We want them to feel the love of a family and have a full life out of a shelter type of situation.  Daphne has found just that and for this we express our greatest thanks to GAIA DOGS http://www.gaiadogs.org/ .  Their continued support not only brings about great futures for our rescues in new homes but also in our daily battles on the front lines of animal rescue on the streets.  Thank you also to Kristien and her family for seeing Daphne for the great dog that she is and for chosing her as the new member of their family.  Daphne, we had high hope for you and we couldn't be happier!!

Below is Daphne with her new friend and in the arms of her new family!!

Thank you
