A Case of Zoophilia

For the past 10 days I have been dealing with a disturbing case of zoophilia.   An 84 year old man was literally caught with his pants down in the town square where I live.  He was seen early in the morning, of April 28th, by another man sitting on a park bench.
As the accused entered the town square carrying a stray dog, the witness, finding this very odd, got up to see what the man was going to do to with her. The witness hid behind a hedge and what he saw left him speechless and unable to move. The man with the dog proceeded to pull down his pants and attempt to have intercourse with her.   Once the act was over, the accused let go of the dog, dressed himself and walked away.  The witness followed and confronted him in one of the town’s coffee shops. After a brief encounter the accused fled, at which point another man at the shop spoke up.  He claimed he too had witnessed the accused doing the same thing with a stray dog in the town square. Wanting to take action they found a way, right then, to contact me.  I did not hesitate to meet with them.  To make a long story short: both incidents were explained to me, I walked with the first witness to the area of the morning’s events, we went to the police where statements were made by both men, I found the stray dog and took her to the vet, the accused was arrested, he was brought in front of the prosecuting attorney who set the trial for May 8th.
These past 10 days have been tense.  The accused’s family, logically very upset, began to use scare tactics.  They went to the police station and created quite a stir stating that they would sue the witnesses for making false statements and a whole bunch of other things.  Now remember, I live in a rural town where news travels fast.  The initial witness, an economic immigrant, had a very tough time. He feared something terrible was going to happen to him and his family. The second witness, a Greek, has an Italian wife who sees these things by way of the mafia.  She was afraid that her husband was going to be taken care of mafia style. I spent some time talking to the families and assuring them that they were doing the right thing and that nothing bad was going to happen to anyone.
This all leads up to today, the court date.  I personally picked up the witnesses in my truck and drove them to the court house.  We were joined by individuals from our volunteer rescue group who came for moral support.  Sometime after noon the court counsel entered and the proceedings began.  The names of the witnesses were called; all present.  The accused, who was not there, was represented by his lawyer who presented the court with two papers; one, as evidence that the accused was in Athens under psychiatric care and thus could not appear; two, an evaluation that showed paraphilia and possible dementia.  With the accused not present the case was move to December 4th, 2014.
You are probably wondering about the dog.  Well, she is the one in the pictures. The original witness told us the dog did let out some cries at the time it was happening.Thankfully, the vet’s exam showed there was no damage done.  Taking into account the age of the accused it would have been almost impossible for him to complete the act on his part. It is sure that the accused, on public grounds, had his pants down, the dog held between his legs attempting to have intercourse with her.  Beyond the initial shock our stray victim is fine.  She is a very calm and friendly young female. This is why the accused was able to catch and handle her.

In conclusion, one can imagine what happened locally with this incident. It was the talk of the town, blogs and newspapers covered the story and then some.  I received calls on my cell phone; I was stopped in the street, or asked while shopping if it was true. Others commented that they knew about this man's, well...habit.  To my surprise, there have been other times that the accused had been seen. It turns out it was one of those dark town secretes where people who knew never dared to do anything, afraid of the local back lash.  In the end, it is obvious that the 84 year old man requires help of some sort. Although late in his life, hopefully he is getting that which he needs.  As for the community and the people within, I think it has been a kind of a catharsis, a relief of their burden for those who knew, and a cleansing of the community from something disturbing lurking within.

I would love to hear your comments.
