After two days of barely moving, she finally started to eat and drink on her own. |
It has been quite a week. Wednesday morning Virna was found, in her excrement, on the side
of the road, her entire body twitching uncontrollably. Someone had laced food
with poison, a common practice here in Greece, with the intent to kill her. After all we and our vets could do (pumping her stomach and the required inter-venous medication) it was up
to her to fight the poison that had made its way through her system. Weak and
unconscious, she was put on IV and cortisone. All we could do was wait and
hope for the best.
We didn’t think she was going to make it
through the day. When evening was upon
us, we didn’t think she was going to make it through the night. When morning arrived and she was still with us,
we were amazed! Most poisonings like this end in death. Although she had not opened her eyes she responded to human
touch, slightly moving her tail. She blew our minds with her strength.
She was giving it her all, fighting for the only thing she has on this earth...
her life! By the evening of the second
day, she had opened her eyes. She was
still very shaky and disoriented with regards to her surroundings but every hour she showed
some improvement.
This morning, Saturday, I went to pick
Virna up from the vet. The last two days
she has been eating and drinking on her own.
Her walk is wobbly and she shows some signs of confusion. She needs a great deal of rest and good food so she can continue to improve. Virna, what
a fighter! Virna you are incredible! I have lost so many dogs to intentional poisonings. It is so spectacular when they make it!!
This is Virna three months ago at the vet when we took her to be spayed. |
June 7th, 2014
It took Virna about a week to recover after she was released from the vet. During that week she had grave problems with her stability and remained on cortizone treatment. Then one day...she just walked fine. Everything cleared up. I still can't get over the image of her thrashing around on the side of the road. It is so amazing that she is with us.
All of us who care for you love you Virna. |
