Spending my
summers in rural Greece as a child, I had witnessed various appalling behaviours
towards companion animals. These behaviours were common practice then, some 30
odd years ago, and unfortunately still around today. One such practice is abandoning new born unwanted puppies and kittens in fields, either in plastic bags or in boxes, to die of starvation and exposure or in
garbage bins to be mulched up by the garbage truck. I have been
made aware of other methods such as drowning the newborns in a pail of water, squishing them
to death with a hoe or burying them alive. In a conversation years ago with someone,
he explained to me he puts unwanted newborn puppies from his dog in an area he knows
foxes live so that the foxes will eat them.
This brings
me to, May 13th, 2014, four tiny kittens left alone in a field under
the sun. Their eyes closed shut from puss; their piercing cries filling the
air. Thank goodness their call for help
was heard by Despina who takes that route often for her daily walk. She gathered them up, took them home, did the
best she could to clean their eyes and began to feed them with a syringe. When I
returned her missed call on my mobile I heard her desperately asking for my help. (There is some suspicion as to who abandoned them, more on that latter. )
We
have split up the litter. Here are two
of the four. The first 24 hours they spent most of the time crying frantically,
perhaps, for their mother. With a routine feeding
schedule they are calming down and already putting on weight. Our first goal is
to help them get to the appropriate age for their first vaccines. They are about 15-20 days old. Lets hope they make it. Stay tuned for their progress.
(I have to add that we can find cruelty to animals all around the globe. Although, there are people here in Greece who still hold on to outdated ideas, there is a growing population of individuals who are truly progressive in the area of animal care. These are the people who will bring about change. )

Here they are, one week later, Menelaus and Paris! Hungry for life; fiesty little ones, growing everyday.
Menelaus' and Paris two siblings are also doing well. I will be visiting them tomorrow and I will have an update then.
June, 7th, 2014
Menelaus and Paris are healthy and growing fast. It has been almost a month since they were found and next week they will be old enough to get their first shots. Hurray that we didn't have to deal with any kitten viruses. Their siblings are also healthy and well.
There is no better pillow than a brother to snuggle up to. |
September 17th,
Would you like to find out how Menalaus and Paris are doing?
The pictures will speak for themselves. They are still with us in our home. They are spunky, alert, playful and very cuddly.
Menelaus being extremely cute. His best side. |
Menelaus ready to play! |
Paris is always everywhere, |
Pairs, what a pose. |
This is beautiful but very sad story. Unfortunately.
