They are so
vulnerable and tiny. They can’t fend for nor
feed themselves; they won’t survive alone. Someone who has a female dog, allows her to
get pregnant, to go through the whole process of giving birth; to start raising
them and then when they are just shy of 2 months they take her babies away from
her and dump them somewhere not knowing or caring about their fate. The dangers are numerous.
Meet Agnes
and Astra. They were abandoned on the
dark side of my property in the middle of the night next to a dangerous road. It is obvious the people who left them took me into consideration when they dumped them close to my house. The fact that by chance I was still awake and
heard their cries makes the puppies lucky for early in the morning that road is used
by heavy tractors and trucks. They are
also extremely lucky because at the time I was in communication with the
founder of Gaia Dogs who was moved by the whole situation and immediately
reached out to help. This does not happen often. Please read a previous post - http://forthestrays.blogspot.gr/2014/04/puppies-puppies-everywhere.html
Agnes and Astra
are the fortunate ones. However, there
are hundreds and hundreds of puppies abandoned in this manner and who never
make it through the first day let alone the first few hours. What do these actions say about the people
who are capable of carrying them out? Are
they acts of desperation, ignorance, cruelty … all of the above or something else entirely?
The
important thing is that these two are fortunate. I am quite grateful to Gaia Dogs who is
going to help and when it’s time take them under its wing.

It has been a month since Agnes and Astra unexpectadly arrived. They are playful, fiesty and have been accepted by all of the members of the my pack. They are growing into two beautiful little girls. Here they are...
Agnes - smart, fiesty, and what a face! |
Astra - easy going, beautiful colours, wonderful eyes! |

August 25th, Update
Astra and
Agnes have left the country! Yes on
August 16th, I drove them to the airport in Kalamata where we met up
with their escort to Dusseldorf and off they went to their new lives. I always
get chocked up when a rescue, leaves. I
am going to miss them on the one hand and on the other I am so very pleased
that I was able to give them the chance to find a better life. Gaia Dogs* has been by our side with Astra and
Agnes (and more) and once in Germany the little sisters were under their care. Having been reserved Agnes and Astra have quickly moved on to
their adoptive families. Both little
girls are doing well and the families are apparently in love with them. Follow the pictures below.

Travel day, August 16, 2014. I had been crate training them from the day they arrived so being in the crate was a piece of cake. They got a little car sick. however, and I had to make a few stops on the way to the airport.
Linda Kokkores was waiting for us at the airport. She was Astra's and Agnes' Escort to Dusseldorf where they would next be picked up by a member of Gaia Dogs.
Thank you Linda for your help! |
This is what Astra's adoptive family had to say in an e-mail to the member of Gaia dogs who oversaw the adoption.
"Luca (Astra) is GREAT!
She is very sweet, is already obedient and is very eager to learn.
Alexander has already taught her to sit and to lie down.
She
likes to go in the bench or her pillow to rest, she is always following
us with her eyes and as we stand up she is following us.
She likes to walk in the garden and a walk is also going ok.
She slept through the night without squealing. Terrific!
We want by the vet; she is very healthy but may gain some weight.
In September she will start at school in the puppy class.
Many thanks for this great dog."
Here are a few pictures I recieved from Gaia Dogs of Agnes in her new home. Fantastic! My little sweety!!
Thank you Gaia Dogs for your help with Astra and Agnes and for your contined support!
